Multicultural communities play a vital role in donation and transplantation. Donor Awareness Month (NMDAM)is celebrated throughout August to increase organ donor registrations among communities of color, which makeup60percent of the more than 100,000 people on the national transplant waitlist. There areabout5,000 children and adults on the waitlist in Gift of Life Donor Program’s region, which includes the eastern half of Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware. NMDAM helps dispel myths and raise awareness of the importance of organ donation among communities of color, which are at a higher risk of developing diabetes and high blood pressure, the leading causes of kidney failure. NMDAM is also a time to honor the multicultural heroes who made up more than30percent of living and deceased organ donors last year. Transplants can be successful regardless of the ethnicity of the donor and recipient. However, a recipient may live longer if their donor is closely matched in terms of shared genetic background. Working together, we can diversify the donor registry, build a positive culture of organ, tissue and cornea donation in all communities and achieve a day when no patient dies waiting for a second chance at life.
